SOUTHERN GAS CORRIDOR

This is a huge gas pipeline project that will transport the gas produced within the framework of Shah Deniz Phase-2 to Europe. For the first time, the Southern Gas Corridor will change the energy map of the entire region by connecting the gas supply in the Caspian region to the European markets.

The project includes four stages:

  1. Shah Deniz Phase-2
  2. South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP)
  3. The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline(TANAP)
  4. Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)

The length of the pipeline is 3,500 km. TANAP is 1850 km, TAP is 878 km and SCP is 691 km. The Southern Gas Corridor is a complex project that involves various stakeholders - including 7 countries and 11 companies. At the initial stage, it is planned to transport 6 billion m3 of gas to Turkey and 10 billion m3 of gas to Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor pipeline has been designed so that the transmission capacity can be doubled to its initial transmission capacity in order to be able to supply additional volumes of gas in the future.

The Southern Gas Corridor was launched in May 29, 2018 in Baku and the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), which is an important part of the corridor, was opened in June 12, 2018 in Eskisehir. The first commercial gas was transported to Turkey via Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) in June 30, 2018.

It is planned to deliver Azerbaijan’s natural gas to Europe in 2020.

The overall value of the Southern Gas Corridor is 40 billion US dollars.

SHAH DENIZ PHASE-2

“Shah Deniz Phase-2” is a huge project that will produce 16 billion m3 of gas including the annual 10 billion m3 of gas produced by “Shah Deniz Phase-1” project. By increasing up to 2500 m high and going down to 800 m deep in the seabed, Shah Deniz gas will be transported. The project includes the following works:

  • Construction of two offshore platforms combined by a bridge;
  • Drilling 26 gas producing wells by 2 semisubmersible drilling rig;
  • Construction of 500 km long submarine pipelines that will connect wells with the onshore terminal
  • Modernization of the ships conducting offshore construction;
  • Expanding the Sangachal terminal for the installation of new gas processing and compressing facilities.

The works on producing the first gas within the “Shah Deniz Phase-2” project have been completed by 100%.  The overall project work has been implemented by 92.5%. Commercial gas was transported to Turkey in June 30, 2018 within the framework of “Shah Deniz-2” and the first gas was produced in “Shah Deniz Bravo” platform in the end of July.

The overall value of “Shah Deniz 2” is 22.7 billion US dollars.

SOUTH CAUCASUS PIPELINE EXPANSION

The expansion of the South Caucasus Pipeline is part of the Shah Deniz field development project. Project work started in 2013. The expansion of the South Caucasus Pipeline includes the construction of a new pipeline throughout Azerbaijan and the construction of two new compressor stations in Georgia. This allows the volume of gas exported via the pipeline to increase up to 23 billion m3 annually.

At the border with Georgia and Turkey, the pipeline will connect to another pipeline and will transport gas to Turkey and Europe. The pipeline was exploited in 2018. Currently, commercial transportations to Turkey via the pipeline are carried out, and the SCPX facilities in Azerbaijan and Georgia and pipeline parts carry export gas volumes. The overall work on the “South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion” has been implemented by 99.9%. The overall value of the project is 4.5 billion US dollars.

TANAP

Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), which will transport the gas produced in the Shah Deniz-2 field in Azerbaijan’s sector of the Caspian Sea to Turkey and to Europe, will connect to the South Caucasus Pipeline on the Turkey-Georgia border and will connect to the Trans-Adriatic (TAP) gas pipeline on the Turkey-Greece border.

The total length of the TANAP is 1850 km, Georgia-Turkey border - Eskisehir part is 1350 km and the length of the Eskisehir-Turkey-Greece section is 480 km. Moreover, TANAP consists of 18 km sub-sea section.

The initial transmission capacity of the pipeline is 16 billion m3 and later this capacity can be increased up to 31 billion m3.

TANAP gas pipeline was put into operation in Eskisehir, Turkey on June 12, 2018. The first gas transportation to Turkey started on June 30. It is planned to transport 2 billion m3 of Azerbaijan’s natural gas to Turkey via TANAP in 2019, 4 billion m3 in 2020 and 6 m3 in 2021.

In general, the project work has been completed by 99.1 %.

The overall value of TANAP is 6.96 billion US dollars.

The share of TANAP shareholders in this project is as follows:  the Southern Gas Corridor CJSC - 51%, SOCAR Turkey Energy Inc. (STEAŞ) - 7%, Botas - 30% and BP - 12%.

TAP

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) project is an extension of the SCP and TANAP and it will transport the gas produced in “Shah Deniz-2” via Greece and Albania through the Adriatic Sea to the South of Italy and then to Europe.

The length of the pipeline is 878 km (Greece-550 km, Albania-215 km, the Adriatic Sea-105 km, Italy-8 km), and diameter is 48 inches (sub-sea section is 37 inches). The lowest part of the pipeline will be at a depth of nearly 820 m above sea level, and the highest part will be at a height of 1800 m in the Albanian Mountains.

The initial transmission capacity of TAP will be 10 billion m3 and it is planned to increase this capacity up to 20 billion m3. Two compressor stations will be constructed within the framework of the project, one in Kipoi, Greece and the other one in Fier, Albania. TAP project work has been completed by 84.6 %.

10% of construction works have been completed in the 105 km section of the pipeline, which will go through the Adriatic Sea. Construction of the offshore part of TAP will be conducted in 2019.

The overall value of TAP is 4.5 bln. EURO.
